Self-management
During my years of studying International Leisure and Events Management, I have learned a lot about myself, my strengths, and my weaknesses. Time management has always been difficult for me when it comes to something personal. However, this only applies when the result only affects me. By working in teams (or for someone) I figured out that my motivation and work style is different from when I work alone. Working with a group of people gives me the motivation in order to manage my time efficiently and effectively. This can be seen during meetings, where I always try to keep the meeting efficient if it looks like we are running in circles. Even though I like to bring a good atmosphere in the group during meetings, I personally like to have my meetings efficient.
Another difficulty for me was the fear to fail something or someone. When I started the study I was introduced to Problem Based Learning (PBL). This system focussed on the learning through doing, also known as learning through failure. This was a big thing for me since I had to learn that the biggest learning moments lay in failure. Once I started to see that this is an opportunity, rather than a set-back, the process became a fair amount easier for me. Even though this is something I still struggle with on a day-to-day basis, the study has helped me to see that being afraid of what might happen will only lead to regrets and that sometimes you just have to take the leap and jump in the cold water.
An example of a situation where I had to manage myself was the one of the last school years. Since I still had to finish assignments from the past years I had a year where I had to set my own deadlines and make my own planning. I knew this was going to be difficult, so I decided to make a planning and overview of all ECs I still had to get. I also started to use my phone as a schedule for not only school activities, but also for my regular life and appointments and other things I might forget. This has given me a lot of structure already and is something I expanded on during my internship.
